Its sewer network has been under strain. In August 2024 the City described a sewage crisis near Bloekombos, where about 9,400 shacks had been built during Covid and 125 of them sat on top of sewer manholes, with pollution reaching streets in Kuils River.
The City has been working on it. It spent R54.8 million on interim measures in Wallacedene and Bloekombos, including generators at pump stations, sand traps and daily jetting. In June 2026 the Mayco member for water joined a jetting crew in Kraaifontein as part of a winter drive that cleaned 625.5 km of sewers across the metro and cut overflows by about 32 percent. The causes the City names include stormwater getting into the sewer, illegal connections, foreign objects, fat and removed manhole covers.
Good drainage design plans for that day. The gully outside is meant to be the relief point: set a little lower than every shower tray, bath and floor waste in the house, so that if the drain ever backs up, the overflow happens in the yard. It is a safety feature, not a convenience: the alternative is sewage coming up through the floor of a bathroom.
Gullies stop doing that job over time. Paving laid higher around them, a gully cover sealed or built over, a gully raised during renovation, or a floor waste installed lower than the gully all move the lowest point indoors. It is a quick check: the top of the gully should sit clearly below the level of the lowest shower tray or floor waste in the house.
Go and look at your gully. If it sits higher than your shower floor, or it has been covered over, a sewer backup will choose the inside of the house. Lowering or reopening a gully is a small job compared with cleaning up after one.

Stop using water in the house so you are not adding to it, keep people away from the affected area, and call for help. Then check the gully outside: if it is dry or covered, the backup has found the shower instead.
The City names stormwater getting into the sewer as one of the causes of overflows. A roof gutter or yard drain connected to the sewer adds to it, and those connections should be separated.
