Drain unblockingGoodwood was laid out in 1905 and named after the English racecourse, became a municipality in 1938, and took in Elsies River and Monte Vista in the 1940s and Edgemead in 1969. It is one of the older parts of the Northern Suburbs, and its mains have been giving the City trouble.
In October 2025 the City reported nearly 30 burst pipes in Goodwood in a single month, with some streets bursting two or three times. The acting Mayco member for water traced the renewed bursts and fluctuating pressure to performance issues at the Frans Conradie pressure-reducing valve. The City had already spent more than R8 million in Tygerdal over three years, including 3,300 metres of mains replaced by pipe-cracking in streets such as Vryburger, Oranje and De Reyger, and planned a further R6.7 million project to replace more than 2 km of mains.
The City fixes its own pipes at no cost to you. What it does not do is check yours. Each street burst means the supply is shut off and refilled, and each time the City warns residents that the water may come back milky from trapped air and asks them to keep their taps closed until it is restored.
After a run of repairs in your street, a few checks on the house side are worth the ten minutes. Check that no flexible hose under a basin or cistern has started weeping. Read the meter with every tap closed to make sure nothing on your side is leaking. Clean the aerators on the taps that have gone weak. If the meter is moving, that is a leak on your property, and it is yours to fix.
When the street has burst more than once, check your own side of the meter. The City will fix its main; only you will notice if something on your property started leaking the same week.
The first job is always to work out whose problem it is. Nobody should pay a plumber for the City's pipe.

The City explains that water can look milky or discoloured for a short time after a supply is restored, because of trapped air in the pipes. Run an outside cold tap until it clears.
